F1, the new regulation postponed to 2022

Waiting to understand when the season will begin it was decided to postpone the regulatory revolution to 2022, confirmed the budget cap for 2021

With the calendar being defined and updated and the concrete prospect that the season starts no earlier than June, F1 tries to look further ahead into the future and Liberty Media has dealt with the different teams to understand how to try to limit costs and to amortize the lost revenues of 2020 between postponed and other canceled trips.

Regulation 2021

The main novelty is that the regulatory revolution scheduled for 2021 will shift one season and begin in 2022. It means that the 2020 single-seaters will be largely the same as those used in 2021 at least in most of the elements. This radically changes the strategies of the teams that will have more time to work on the projects of the new single seaters but will probably have to face a hierarchy of values that will continue not only in this but also in the next season. Mercedes could continue to have a large advantage and Red Bull and Ferrari forced to chase with reduced recovery margins since this generation of single-seater has reached the end of its evolution cycle. It could have a significant impact on the results and on the spectacle of what will take place in 2020 and throughout 2021.

Budget cap

Budget caps had already been discussed for 2021 and if before it seemed a virtuous exercise to try to limit the expenses of the teams with more room for maneuver and decrease the gap between the various stables, now it will be a need for the circus without distinctions. For this reason, it was decided to confirm it for 2021 with a choice that had unanimous opinion from all the teams. This can be read in parallel with the previous paragraph, since lower margins for the development of single-seaters also require lower economic investments. Certainly for the revolution, for regulations and perhaps also for results, we will have to wait for 2022. For Ferrari it is not necessarily good news.
